Introduction
The Lord Jesus is one hundred percent God and one hundred percent human. He is the only sinless human (2 Corinthians 5:21) and the only begotten Son of God (John 1:14, John 1:18, John 3:16). In His Deity and humanity, He is God of the Trinity of God, and He is One with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit from the beginning (John 1:1). In Hebrews chapter 10, we learn that the Lord Jesus Christ is the perfect sacrifice made once for the entire human race. He offered Himself once and forever as a sacrifice for sins and then sat down at the right hand of God the Father. Because of that, God the Father took away the Old Covenant and established a New Covenant in the blood of the Lord Jesus, “by which will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” So, for a believer in the Lord Jesus, keeping the Old Covenant means keeping the New Covenant in the blood of the Lord Jesus. The Lord Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father but by Him (John 14:6).
The Lord Jesus is Son of God and Son of Man at the Same Time
The Lord Jesus is both the Son of God and the Son of Man, meaning that He is one hundred percent God and one hundred percent Man. This section presents Biblical verses and comments supporting these claims. Many of these comments can also be found in our Bible Commentary Forever work. We encourage all readers to check the links provided and meditate on all the comments we provide.
John 1:18. No one has seen God ever yet; only the begotten God, the One existing in the bosom of the Father, He shows the way.
“No one has seen God ever yet.” As the verse says, nobody ever has seen the Father because all things are just created things; the eyes cannot afford to see the Father Himself. With human eyes, you cannot see the Father. The human eyes cannot see the Father, but the Father has shown Himself through the beloved Son of God.
“Only the begotten God the One existing in the bosom of the Father, He shows the way.” As the verse tells all believers, the beloved Son of God has the Father Himself in Him; whatever the beloved Son of God has taught that is the Father Himself teaching humans, all humans can know the Father through the beloved Son of God’s teachings.
Here, we can ask ourselves, what does it mean when the Bible says, “begotten God,” and how is the Lord Jesus begotten if He is part of the Trinity? The Father Himself is the head of the Trinity; in the Father, the beloved Son, and the Holy Spirit also exist; that is why we can say the Trinity of God is Three, but all are One in the Father. With the mercy of the Father, He has allowed the beloved Son and the Holy Spirit to come out and shine to be the light for all, but the Trinity is always still there, Three in One; this is its meaning. Think in this way: the Father is here; with the mercy of the Father Himself, He has allowed the beloved Son and the Holy Spirit to have the work by themselves; the beloved Son has come down to take human form, and the Holy Spirit has come down to be as the guide and speaking to every heart regarding the love of the Father. In the Father Himself, He has given birth to the beloved Son of God, that is why always the beloved Son will call Father I will do your will. As the Bible tells us, He always calls God the Father as His Father. It is not complicated when we think that the Father is One. Still, in that One, there are another Two, and the Three become One together; no separation.
Then, one might ask, how was the Holy Son Jesus born to be the Son of God and the Son of Man at the same time? The Lord Jesus is the Son of God and the Son of Man. The Holy Spirit conceived the baby Jesus in the virgin Mary’s womb. The Holy Spirit dwelt in the egg of Mary to make the egg conceive — God to be a Man. The Bible tells us how this happened. First, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth to a virgin named Mary. In Luke chapter 1, we read the Lord Jesus’ birth account. Below, we present comments on some essential verses from this chapter.
Luke 1:30. Fear not, Mary; for you have found favor with God.
Pay attention to the words “found favor with God”; the Lord clearly tells her who she is dealing with. The angel represented the Lord when talking to her. Gabriel is an angel from the Lord God the Father, and the word he brings is from God the Father.
Luke 1:31. And behold, you will conceive in your womb, and will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS.
This verse describes the moment when the Lord Himself chose the person to give birth to His Beloved Son of God. In this place, it also tells that the woman the Lord chose to carry the Beloved Son of God is worthy and a good woman.
Luke 1:32. He will be great, and He will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His father David;
Luke1:33. and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of His kingdom there will be no end.
“And of His kingdom there will be no end.” Here, it tells us that Jesus is King of all, not just of one group of people, because His kingdom has no end on earth, beneath earth, and in heaven; that is His kingdom, with no end.
Luke 1:34. And Mary said to the angel, How will this be, since I am a virgin?
This question is a common question for her. Mary, as a young, innocent girl, knew that in order to have children, one needed physical contact, but she was a virgin who had never been touched by a man.
Luke 1:35. And the angel answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the being born will be called the Son of God.
“And the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” This saying shows there is no physical contact with Mary from the Lord as humans do; the physical contact is only by the shadow of the Most High over her egg. The Lord does not need to have physical interaction with sperm and egg, as humans do for procreation. With Mary, by His shadow, the egg conceived the baby Jesus. The Lord Jesus must be a hundred percent human, and the woman’s egg is needed for this.
“The being born will be called the Son of God.” Because the power of the Most High overshadowed the egg of Mary, the Child Jesus is Holy and the Son of God.
The Public Testimony of God the Father about His Son, the Lord Jesus
In Matthew 3:16-17, we have the testimony of God the Father Himself to John the Baptist and the people around when the Lord Jesus was baptized in water by John, and God the Father Himself identified Himself as the Father of the Lord Jesus.
Matthew 3:16-17. Now, Jesus, having been baptized, ascended immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, alighting upon Him; and behold, a voice from out of the heavens, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
These verses show a reunion between the Father, the Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit (the Trinity of God). John saw part of the reunion act, while all the other people present only heard the voice of the Father.
Therefore, the Father of the Lord Jesus is God the Holy Spirit, not any human, and His mother is a woman, the virgin Mary. The Lord Jesus was born by the power of the Holy Spirit, not by the will of the flesh or of man, as John 1:13 verse testifies to us when it says about the Lord Jesus: “who was born, not out of blood, nor out of the will of the flesh, nor out of the will of man, but of God.”
“Who was born, not out of blood, nor out of the will of the flesh.” At first, all readers should think, when the verse says, “not out of the blood,” what do they think of that blood? The beloved Son of God was not born through the sperm of a human, which is the blood; that is the meaning. When the Bible says, “nor out of the will of the flesh,” the beloved Son of God was not born through the woman’s will but by the will of the Father Himself, who gave the woman to be able to conceive the beloved Son in her womb; that is why the verse tells He was not born by the will of the flesh.
“Nor out of the will of man, but of God.” From the verse itself, we can see that the beloved Son of God came down to be born by the will of the Father Himself, which is the most honorable will; also, the beloved Son of God Himself was utterly willing to come down to do so the Father’s will.
Joseph is the Caretaker of the Lord Jesus
In Matthew chapter 1, we are given the genealogy of the Lord Jesus Christ, Son of David, Son of Abraham which shows that Joseph was the caretaker of the Lord Jesus, and through him, it was fulfilled the unconditional prophecy given to King David. However, Joseph was not the physical father of the Lord Jesus, the Holy Spirit is.
Matthew 1:18-20. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in this manner: His mother Mary having been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found in womb having a child of the Holy Spirit. And Joseph, her husband, being righteous and not wishing to expose her publicly, was minded to send her away privately. But he, having pondered on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take to you Mary, your wife; for that having been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
“For that having been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” It is a wonderful experience for God to be a human and to make people see Him in the Lord Jesus. People cannot say anymore that God doesn’t know what it is to be a human.
The Resurrection of the Lord Jesus is a Testimony to His Deity and Humanity
The Lord Jesus came on earth as the Son of God and the Son of Man, and He, as the sinless Lamb of God, was put to death on the cross of Calvary to die a cruel death for the sins of the world (Mark 15:20-41). They laid His body in a tomb (Matthew 27:57-66), but as the Bible tells us, after three days, He rose again (Mark 16:6). After the Lord Jesus rose from the dead, in the body, as the Bible tells us He was caught up to the heaven as God and Man (Luke 24:51) and is seated at the right hand of God the Father (Mark 16:19, Hebrews 10:22-23, Matthew 26:64, Mark 14:62). The Lord Jesus, God of the Trinity, has taken His human body with Him up into the heaven and is seated at the right hand of Power. The Gospels present various details of the Lord Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. In particular, the Gospel of John chapter 20 presents the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus and His appearances to Mary Magdalene and the disciples to strengthen their faith in the work of the Gospel. Specifically, in this chapter, the Lord Jesus appeared to the disciples, showed them His hands and His side, and gave them the Holy Spirit. We encourage all readers to read this chapter and the comments we post along the chapter’s verses. In this blog, we will focus on the verse of John 20:19 and comment on the Lord Jesus’ deity and humanity, being both God and Man simultaneously, even after the resurrection. After the resurrection, the Lord Jesus is forever God and Man at the same time. He could walk through anything; neither wood nor iron could stop Him. No one would notice His movements either. He is human, but also God in the same time; He has already returned to the Father and received back all the glory of the beloved Son of God to cover the human body.
John 20:19. It being, therefore, evening, on that day, the first after Sabbath, and the doors having been shut where the disciples were because of fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and says to them, Peace to you.
“It being, therefore, evening, on that day, … because of fear of the Jews.” The disciples’ lives at that time were not easy because of the good news they were spreading regarding the beloved Son of God, which was against most people’s beliefs. The disciples believed that the beloved Son of God in human form was also indeed the Son of God even though He was a human; God has become a Man and dwelled with humans; therefore, He is the Son of Man as well.
“And the doors having been shut … Jesus came and stood in the midst.” Jesus resurrected in the body, which here is important in how He appeared to them. The beloved Son of God is a hundred percent human and a hundred percent God simultaneously. The resurrected Lord has conquered all; He conquered the living and the death; nothing can block Him anymore; even being in human form, He can go through all things; nothing can block His way anymore. After the beloved Son of God was resurrected from death, His human form and the heavenly form were joined, not just covered any longer; the human form of the beloved Son of God now has the same power as the heavenly form because He has conquered all. We should not think that the Lord Jesus’ human body was transformed at the resurrection, but instead, we must think that His resurrected human body has joined His heavenly body; if the human body is transformed, then it will change, but when they are joined, the two will cover over each other, the two become one and the beloved Son of God has both forms, the human form, and the heavenly form. Furthermore, we cannot think that the human body of the Lord Jesus is being preserved through the heavenly body; however, we must believe that His human body came to life and is alive as a human body, which has joined with the heavenly body. The heavenly form has given life to the human form; in the human form, the beloved Son of God now has blood and water from the heavenly form to replace all that He has lost on the cross. When humans have crucified the beloved Son of God on the cross, the heavenly form has given all the life back to the human body; now the beloved Son of God has complete human life and body in Him, and He has joined with the heavenly form; the beloved Son of God has become one hundred percent of both forms in One. All the food and every nutrition for this human body are received through His own heavenly form; He does not need human food, but all the food that His human body needs, the heavenly form gives it.
We must believe that only the beloved Son of God will have human form in the new world to come; He will be the only true human left; He is the only God and Man at the same time.
People Questioned and still Question the Deity of the Lord Jesus
People have questioned the deity of the Lord Jesus in the past and now, and many false doctrines about Him have appeared. Furthermore, people have also given miraculous power, which has no support in the Holy Bible, to the Lord Jesus’ mother, Mary. Also, people have argued that the virgin birth of the Lord Jesus required that Mary remain a virgin and never have other children with Joseph. We will comment on Matthew 13:53-56 and John 8:41-43 verses to refute some false beliefs.
Matthew 13:53-56. And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, He departed from there. And having come into His own region, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, From where to this, this wisdom, and the miraculous powers? Is not this the carpenter's Son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers, James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Judas? And His sisters, are not all with us? From where then to this, all these things?
This passage shows how the people in the Lord Jesus’ hometown think of Him. For them, in their eyes, the Lord Jesus was just a simple man. They used the earthly family of the Lord Jesus to judge Him. His mother, father, and siblings all made mistakes the same way as everybody, so the people could not see the deity of the Lord Jesus as the Son of God. In these types of people’s eyes, if the Lord Jesus is the Son of God, Mary cannot have other children, and the Lord Jesus’ siblings become the main issue. Since they have seen Mary pregnant by Joseph and having other children after the Lord Jesus, they cannot accept that He is the Son of God. They use the Lord Jesus’ earthly family to make people not believe in the virgin birth. Their logic is that if Mary had a child with the Holy Spirit, then Joseph cannot touch her and have children. The holiness of the virgin birth becomes impossible for them since Mary had other children with Joseph. However, the Bible tells us that Mary was not holy but a blessed woman; she was blessed because the Lord chose her to carry the Lord Jesus in her womb, but she was just a human and lived as a human. After Mary gave birth to the Lord Jesus, she had an everyday human life, as every woman should have, and she had to do her duty as a wife to Joseph. No one should worship Mary; she was a blessed woman, but not more than that (See Luke 1:48). She couldn’t perform any miracles, and there is no record in the Bible that she ever performed any miracles. The people in her hometown saw her having more children, but God had only one Son, and it is written that the Lord Jesus is the begotten Son of God (See John 1:14, John 1:18, John 3:16, and 1 John 4:9).
John 8:41. You are doing the works of your father. They said to Him, We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
“You are doing the works of your father.” The beloved Son of God has told them that they do the works of their earthly father by pushing away the truth and being stubborn as an ox; their own actions and answers also support this.
“They said to Him, …” Here, they mean that if the Lord Jesus is the beloved Son of God, then His Father cannot be a human, and Mary is not fit to be a mother. Also, at the same time, they have told the beloved Son of God that they are the children of God, and God the Father is their Father as well; but, this saying is by their own understanding only, not because this has been taught to them, but they take themselves to be different than the rest of humans. All they want is to make sure and confirm to their children that if this is indeed the Son of God, Mary should not be married to a human, and because they have seen Mary use her life as a human, the birth of the beloved Son of God has become a question for them. That way of belief is common in human thinking, and if you want to set up a belief, and if that belief fits with human thought, then that belief will catch on. But if you want to believe that the beloved Son of God has not been born by human will but by the will of God the Father alone, you must believe in the virgin birth of Jesus and that Mary did not conceive through human seed but by the Holy Spirit, and this is a miracle.
John 8:42. Jesus said to them, If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I came forth and am here from God; for not even have I come of Myself, but He sent Me.
The beloved Son of God has said to all of His people that if they truly believe in God the Father, then they will believe in Him as well because their love for the Father will guide them to know the Father’s will; the same as the beloved Son of God has loved the Father and does all things according to the Father’s will for Him to become a human, it has already shown love and respect in Himself towards God the Father.
John 8:43. Because of what do you not understand My talk? Because you are not able to hear My word.
When the beloved Son of God told them that they could not hear His word, He did not mean only the physical ear alone but also the spiritual ear because the beloved Son of God has not talked in riddles but straight that He is coming from God the Father Himself.
Conclusions
God the Father wants all humans to come to His Son Jesus for the forgiveness of sins and pray in the name of the Lord Jesus for the Holy Spirit to come into their hearts so they can understand His Word. Specifically, as true believers and followers of the Lord Jesus, we must believe that the Lord Jesus is the Son of God and the Son of Man at the same time as the Word of God tells us, meaning one hundred percent God and one hundred percent human. We must believe in the miraculous virgin birth of the Lord Jesus from the virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit shadowing the egg of Mary and conceiving the baby Lord Jesus in her womb. Also, we must believe in the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus and that after the resurrection, He took His human body into heaven and is still both God and Man and is seated in this way at the right hand of God the Father. Furthermore, we must believe that Mary, after the birth of the Lord Jesus, lived her life as the wife of Joseph, and they had children together. However, Mary is not to be worshiped; she is not God; the Bible doesn’t show that she ever performed any miracles; she is just the most blessed woman on earth by being the earthly mother of the Lord Jesus. Also, Joseph is the most blessed man on earth, as he was the adoptive Father to the Lord Jesus; through him, the Lord Jesus connects to the genealogy line of David.
The Lord Jesus came on earth as the Son of God and the Son of Man to bring salvation for all humans by His sacrificial death on the cross. The Lord Jesus says in John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father if not by Me.” As true believers in the Lord Jesus, we must reject all false teachings about the Lord Jesus and ground our faith in the Word of God by reading and meditating daily on the Word of God. We must believe that the Lord Jesus is God of the Trinity and He is “the King of kings, and Lord of lords; who only has immortality, dwelling in light unapproachable; whom no man has seen, nor can see; to whom be honor and power eternal” as written in 1 Timothy 6:15-16, and only through Him we can gain eternal life. Let us humbly come to the foot of the cross of Calvary, glorify the name of the Lord Jesus, and give Him the praise and honor He richly deserves.
Meditation tasks:
- Think about your difficulties regarding the Lord Jesus being the Son of God and the Son of Man!
- Find verses to support that the Lord Jesus is indeed the Son of God and the Son of Man.
- Meditate why Mary cannot be worshiped and why she had lived her life as a normal wife of Joseph after the Lord Jesus’ birth.
